The Titanic Submarine’s Operation, Controls, And Whereabouts Are All That Are Now Known.

Time is running out for the five individuals missing in the Atlantic as the world watches. On Sunday, the adventurers left Canada with the goal of viewing the Titanic wreck. However, something went wrong during the two-and-a-half-hour descend, and they lost touch with the submersible.

Later that day, a rescue effort was started, but so far, search crews have not been able to find the missing sub. We examine the failed expedition in light of the experts’ warning that people on board barely have enough oxygen to survive until Thursday AM British time.

Titan Submersible

Titan has a depth limit of 13,123 feet, or 4,000 metres, below sea level. The only submersible with an integrated real-time health monitoring system that provides an early warning system should something go wrong, it is built of titanium and carbon fibre. The walls of the submarine are heated since temperatures can drop dramatically at such great depths. Light is only provided by wall-mounted bulbs on board. Passengers are able to view the Titanic’s wreck through a small aperture near the front of the ship.

The Diving Platform

To reach a depth of 9.1 metres and avoid any surface turbulence, the Titan starts its fall on a platform that fills its ballast tanks with water. After that, it steps off the platform and continues to drop. The system is brought to the surface in around two minutes by filling the ballast tanks with air at the end of each dive, when the sub ascends to land on the submerged platform.

The Controls

The ship can be moved left, right, back, forward, and up and down using four electric thrusters and a modified Logitech gaming controller. Since GPS is useless at these depths, the sub is directed by texts sent by a crew on the surface vessel above using an ultra-short baseline acoustic system. The video game controller is used by the pilot to steer according to these directives.

3,800 Metres

The depth at which the Titanic’s debris is located is equal to stacking 12 Shards, the tallest structure in Britain, on top of one another.

Water Pressure

At its lowest point, the Titanic’s pressure is thought to be 400 atmospheres, or 6,000 PSI (pounds per square inch). If the weight is progressively increased, the human body can withstand 400 psi.

The Location

Off the Canadian province of Newfoundland is where the Titanic’s wreck is located. This was discovered in 1985.
