How does Instagram Threads work? What is it?

You may have heard that Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk have challenged one another to a cage match. It seems like they could actually have a reason to argue now. Threads, a social networking software from Mark Zuckerberg’s firm Meta (previously Facebook, Inc.), is quite similar to the Twitter app, which is currently owned by rival billionaire Elon Musk. Instagram Threads: What Is It? Here is everything you need to know.

What is Threads?

The firm Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has released a new app (kind of), called Threads. The Instagram team created the app, which is marketed as a tool for joining online discussions and posting text updates. Sounds recognizable? You would be correct if you thought it sounded a lot like Twitter. It appears like Meta has identified a potential market opportunity for a microblogging social network that isn’t plagued by some of the problems that Twitter is currently experiencing. Interestingly, a similar app with the same name, Threads, was also introduced in 2021, but we haven’t heard much about it since. However, the app appears to have undergone a redesign and relaunch at this time.

What does Threads offer?

You can submit messages up to 500 characters long on the Threads app, which is much more than Twitter’s current character limit of 280 (unless you’re a Twitter Blue subscriber) and Mastodon’s default character limit of 500. Your postings may also contain web links, up to five minutes of video, and images.

How does Threads work?

After downloading the app, you may use your current Instagram account to log in. You can opt to modify your profile for your new Threads account, and your username and verification, if applicable, will transfer over.

The option to automatically follow accounts you already follow on Instagram as well as to search for and add new accounts to follow from within the Threads app are then available. Posts from the people you follow and suggested content are mixed together in your feed. Similar to rival apps, this one allows you to comment on, share, and quote other people’s postings.

Is Anyone I’ve Heard Of On Threads?

It takes time for a new social networking app to get users, but since Threads can be accessed by logging into your Instagram account, it shouldn’t take long. Shakira, Lando Norris, Seth Curry, Kingsley Coman, and Gordon Ramsay, everyone’s favorite profanity-loving chef, are a few early adopters.

What Is Different About Threads?

So far, so accustomed. A significant strategy for Threads is, nevertheless, in the works. The goal is to have Threads work with ActivityPub, even though that isn’t the case right now. Social networking apps can communicate with other apps that use the same protocol thanks to this decentralized social networking protocol. Users of Threads should be able to communicate with accounts on various social media networks. So, for instance, you might approve or decline a request from a Mastodon user to follow your Threads account immediately from within Threads. Without ever having a Mastodon account, you could then follow their Mastodon postings in your Threads feed. Even if this function isn’t yet available, it will be interesting to watch how it evolves.

Is Threads safe?

To assist you filter out the stuff you’d prefer not to see, Threads includes many of the capabilities that are integrated into Instagram. You can set up a word filter to prevent posts containing certain words from showing up in your feed or in your answers, and you can regulate who is allowed to reply to you or mention you in a post. You may unfollow, limit, or block accounts directly from within Threads. Any accounts you’ve blocked on Instagram are also instantly blocked on Threads.

Additionally, Threads will apply Instagram’s Community Guidelines, which state that posts must be appropriate for a variety of audiences and cannot contain hate speech or be used to denigrate or humiliate private persons. This is yet another way that Threads is attempting to set itself apart from some of its competitors. Meta is quick to point out that more than $16 billion has been spent on the teams and technology necessary to enforce the rules on Instagram, and the same funds will be used to maintain Threads as a space for “positive and productive conversations.”

Does Threads respect privacy?

You can interpret the fact that it is a Meta-owned software anyway you like. But it does appear that privacy has been a priority from the beginning. When they initially sign in, everyone under the age of 18, or under the age of 16 in some nations, is automatically given a private profile. Then, just like on Instagram, they can authorize anyone who want to follow them on Threads. Additionally, Threads offers many of the same privacy options found on Instagram, such as the ability to block or report other users.
