After two days of discussion and approval in Congress, the Fourth of July began to be observed as the United States’ Independence Day. On June 28, 1870, Congress approved a law designating July 4 as a federal holiday. Federal employees now enjoy a paid holiday thanks to a 1941 law amendment.
